There are many things to like about this book. The people are real and actually lived. The places are real and can be located. The activities of logging, freighting, sailing, etc are real and convincingly described.Somehow though, there seemed to be a depth of feeling missing. It is hard to identify or describe but it is the reason I gave four stars instead of five. Perhaps the author felt constrained not to insert his own thoughts too far into the character of an actual person. That is a challenge with fictionalising the story of someone. I know because it has happened to me.
I especially recommend this book to those with experience or family ties to the Northeast US and to those interested in US history in the 1800 to 1850 period.

Charming story, geographically and technically accurate. If you are from or have visited the area you'll enjoy picturing the area in Joseph's time. Those who know the logging industry will recognize the logging camp scenes. My husband and I enjoyed it very much.
The logging camp of a young man and his growing up . Becoming a man early logging is history. Well worth reading.
This is an easy read in that the author puts you at ease with the characters as you go, not springing new ones on you with no notice, more like a home spun yarn.
I've read a few chapters of this book and I absolutely love it. I recommended it to my father as well! If you enjoy historical fiction, this book is a great choice. The author spent a lot of time ensuring that the details in this work are historically accurate.
Well researched. I grew up in the Waterville area of Maine and my grandmother was a cook in a lumber camp as a young woman. Love reading about real places I can relate to.
This is a wonderful story for those who are familiar with Maine and even those who are not. The characters are well developed and the story line, although not suspenseful, keeps you turning the page to see what happens next! Very well researched, so time period details are accurate. My reading time is very limited in my busy life, but I found myself returning to this book even when I should of been doing other things. I highly recommend this book!!
This book was surprisingly delightful to read because it captured the culture and personalities that were so important in the development of the rural areas of the State of Maine. The character development was excellent, the research into the experiences of the early workers was extensive. Most of all I appreciated the detail in explaining the events in a way that allowed me to learn about skills with which I was previously not familiar but found very interesting. The book is sprinkled with a good deal of gentle humor and also touches on the frailty of people who faced really rough conditions in Maine's early years.
This is a book I would recommend highly to all history students so that they can learn about the lives of the people who helped to build this beautiful state. It took devotion to an ideal and a good deal of extremely hard work to create what we now too frequently take for granted.
The story of Joseph Shorey needs to continue and I look forward to reading the next book in what I hope will be an entire series of stories that will eventually cover Shorey's entire lifetime. Job well done, Mr. Wochna!
